My dog has eye and penis discharge. Is it human chlamydia?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | unneutered | 11 years and 5 months old | 40 lbs

Can dogs catch chlamydia from drinking out of a toilet after an infected person peed and forgot to flush? My dog, Wentworth, has discharge coming from his eyes and penis. He has seasonal allergies and recently was treated for two hematomas on his ear due to an ear infection but otherwise healthy dog. What's going on?

Chlamydia trachomatis that is a sexually transmitted infection in people does not affect dogs. They can get a type of chlamydia infection that could cause upper respiratory signs, but other bacteria, viruses and allergies would be more common causes of eye discharge. Irritation; foreign material or excessive licking are the most common causes of discharge from the prepuce. I would recommend having your vet examine Wentworth to determine what might be causing these symptoms.
