My dog is low energy after spay surgery day 3. Is this normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Goldendoodle | Female | spayed | 8 months and 2 days old | 10 lbs

Belle got neutered on Wednesday and we were told that her being low in energy is to be expected however she hasn’t been. This morning she was walking around and chewing on toys and now she’s just been laying down beside me sleeping. Is this the low energy that they were talking about? I know they say for any surgery day 3 is the worst so perhaps it’s that?

Some dogs do get lethargic after surgery but some do not and in fact have to take sedatives to keep them still. Monitor Bella closely for vomiting, diarrhea or acting like she doesn’t feel good. Otherwise, try to keep her from running, jumping, playing and make sure she cannot lick at the incision. I hope this is helpful and please feel free to post any additional questions.
