Why is my new stray cat so sleepy after a vet visit and shot?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

I just took in a stray I named Rocky, whom we're approximating is at the very least 5 years old. He went to the vet for a general check up and was given an O.K., but a Convenia injection just in case. The issue is: he does practically nothing but sleep - or lie there half asleep - all day, every day. He'll get up to walk a couple steps to his bowl to eat and lay back down to eat, and he'll get up to use his litter box on occasion. That's been it since I've had him. It deepened after the shot.

Hello. It is difficult to say if this is just normal behavior for Rocky, or he has some underlying issue. You do not say how long you have had him, but if he has been on his own for a while, he may just need to regain his strength & is enjoying the company & surroundings he has at this time. If this has been ongoing for awhile, then perhaps a deeper investigation is in order. Blood work, including thyroid levels & a FeLV/FIV test & urinalysis may point to some underlying issues. It is also pretty difficult to accurately determine the age of an adult cat, until they reach 13 or so. Rocky may be a little older than you think. Hopefully, there is nothing too much amiss with him. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
