My dog's ears are dark, crusty, painful. Is it more than an infection?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Jack Russell Terrier | Male | neutered | 1 year and 10 months old

My dogs ears have been painful for him and our vets put this down to an ear infection but couldn't ear see any infection inside his ear. We were given ear drops to rub on the outside and inside of his ears and strong antibiotics Predni but these things have not helped. To begin with his ears were very red and sore and now they are very dark and crusty. Does this look like just an ear infection? Normally his ears stand up but since the infection they are down.

It looks to me like something more serious could be going on, although it can be difficult to tell from a picture. Sometimes vasculitis can cause discoloration and poor blood flow to the tips of the ears - this would need a biopsy for a definite diagnosis. I would recommend rechecking with your vet.

Hi. It is very difficult to tell via these photos unfortunately. If you feel your pet may have an ear infection it would be best to call your veterinarian to make an appointment. You can clean the ears with pet ear cleaner and cotton balls in the meantime. Good luck
