Why is my dog yelping in pain when touched? Is it a pulled muscle?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | neutered | 3 years and 3 months old | 3.8 lbs

It started last night, my dog yelped when I picked him up. Then when I touched a specific part of his body he yelped. It wasn’t his usual yelp more of ‘I’m in pain’ he then started to shake and whimper after he’d been touched. He has eaten fine and excreted fine. Could this be a pulled muscle?

Hi, it can certainly be a pulled muscle and that the pain is elicited when you put pressure on that specific area. If he has eaten and passed normal feaces fine, I would recommend to let him a have a quiet week-end and monitor how symptoms until Monday. If he still seems to be yelping, even if left often, have him checked over. Obviously, if you are worried in the meantime have him checked over sooner. However, with pulled muscles, normally rest does the trick.
