My dog has red welts, scabs, and ear infection. Is it allergies?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Male | 18 lbs

Gizmo recently developed raised, red, and somewhat circular welts near his genital area. He also had an ear infection and a few scabs on his back. Our local vet prescribed two different pills and liquid medication for his ears. However, after using the meds, Gizmo has just developed more scabs. This has never been a problem before, but I assume the cause is allergies. I have been giving him something called “Zesty Bites” in an attempt to get rid of the issue. But would appreciate any advice.

It looks like Gizmo has pyoderma/a bacterial skin infection characterized by scaly red collarettes and papules. The typical treatment is a 10 day course of an antibiotic called Simplicef (cefpodoxime), a medicated antibacterial/anti-fungal shampoo such as Malaseb (available on petco.com or chewy.com or at your vet’s) and a topical antibiotic/steroid ointment such as Dermavet or an antibiotic/steroid powder such as Neopredef with tetracaine. You always have an option of seeing another veterinarian if you are not comfortable going back to your current vet for a recheck. Good luck!
