My dog's booster shots are years overdue. Does he need a new series?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Airedale Terrier | Male | neutered | 52 lbs

My dogs booster injections have been missed by a couple of years. Can he just get his annual booster and be ok or will he need a series of injections to be covered again? Thanks.

That;s a great question! Foggy may need a booster in a month for a couple of his vaccines, but will probably not need a whole new series like he did as a puppy. There are other vaccines that may be good for a year, despite him being overdue. I recommend contacting your veterinarian to book Foggy's vaccination appointment as soon as possible, as certain vaccines (like rabies) can be required by law.

It's true that he does need a booster vaccine approximately one year after finishing his puppy vaccine series - but it won't be a problem that he's a few months overdue, you can go ahead and have the booster done now :) From that point, your vet can advise you on their recommended vaccination protocol. This can vary from one clinic to another depending on what type of vaccine they are using and disease prevalence in your area, so it's best to ask your vet what he/she recommends. Most clinics vaccinate either yearly or every three years, but some recommend titers (blood work to check immunity) instead of boosters or use a more extended protocol.
