My senior dog was scared by a loud alarm. Are his ears damaged?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Male | neutered | 14 years and 2 months old | 9 lbs

My husband made the smoke alarm go off twice without warning, and my 14-year-old Chihuahua went running in distress and hid, trembling. Were his ears damaged? He had a full checkup a few days ago and has no major problems. His hearing was already not what it used to be.

Wally most likely was just scared of the loud sound. If he is acting normal now, then it is unlikely there is physical damage. The link below has information on fear related to fireworks, but a lot of the tips are applicable to other loud noises (like fire alarms) as well https://veterinarypartner.vin.com/default.aspx?pid=19239&id=4952947
