Why is my guinea pig breathing hard, not eating, and pooping a lot?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Guinea Pig | Male | unneutered | 2.6 lbs

My guinea pig makes the “hooting” noise in a way that sounds like he has a hard time breathing. He also hasn’t eaten in a day and he’s been pooping more than normal.

Thanks for reaching out about Rocky. The described noise is likely a respiratory infection and he is feeling poor enough to stop eating. He needs to see a veterinarian to aid in diagnosis and treatment of the problem. Antibiotics are probably needed at the minimum. As this sounds serious, the sooner the better chance for recovery. Good luck.

This is probably due to a gastrointestinal problem, either a bloat or food stasis that is causing abdominal pain. you will need to take Sammy to the vet ASAP in order to get it checked and treated as this can be life threatening.
