My dog's neuter incision is draining a week later. Is it healing okay?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund miniature | Male | neutered | 11 months and 6 days old | 12 lbs

I want to be sure my dog’s incision is healing. He was neutered exactly one week ago. There is a slight amount of draining in the middle of the incision.

It doesn't look a 100%, i would expect it to look a little better after a week but no need to panic either, it doesn't look infected and it will heal eventually, it just may take a little longer than usual.

From what I can tell it looks like it healing well but difficult to say for sure without doing my own exam. you want to make sure it isn't red, oozing any discharge or swollen. If. Not, then it is likely healing normally and not infected. Make sure he doesn't lick the incision and isn't too active until 2 weeks post op to ensure it is completely healed. I hope this helps!

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. The would looks OK on the picture you posted. As long as the incision stays closed and it is not red, swollen, discharging or painful to touch, there is nothing to worry about.
