My dog has reverse sneezing and discharge after boarding. What's next?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | spayed | 1 year and 2 months old | 11 lbs

My dog came home from a week of boarding and has been not eating or drinking very much, very lethargic with diarrhea and sneezing + reverse sneezing quite a bit (10+ times/day) Took her in to vet on Mar 3 and dvm prescribed Omeprazole q 24 hrs x 5 days and Metronidazole q 12 hrs x 7 days. She's eating better now if rescue food is mixed with her dry food and is drinking better, however the reverse sneezing seems to be getting worse. I've also noticed clear, watery discharge from her nose.

Thank you for submitting your question Biscuit. I recommend that you contact her veterinarian to ask if it is possible that she acquired an upper respiratory tract infection while boarding. This is fairly common. She will likely need a different antibiotic to treat it if this the case. I hope this information helps!
