My dog whimpers and shakes when touched. Is he injured or in pain?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | 6 years and 11 months old | 80 lbs

My dog is 7 years old and never cries or whimpers. But today I tried petting him and he freaked out and whimpered. He also had a hard time getting in our bed and in the car moving slowly. But then I took him to the field and he was running fast and seemed fine. Then we for home and he was laying on our bed I barely sat by him and barely touched him and he freaked out and whimpered and was shaking for a little while too. He is a pitbull boxer mix

It sounds like Brutus is painful, and he may have injured himself or could be suffering from something like arthritis. I recommend resting him for the next 48 hours. No running, jumping, or playing. Take him out to toilet on a leash, and bring him right back in when he's done. If he still appears painful after this time, then I would take him into the vet for an exam. The vet can diagnose where the pain is coming from, and can dictate a treatment plan for it. He may also benefit from some pain medications, which the vet can prescribe. Please do not give him any human pain medications, as many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given.
