My cat won't eat while traveling. Is it okay if he only eats treats?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | neutered | 6 years and 11 months old | 10 lbs

So I am currently traveling with my cat and we are staying at a hotel and are flying on a plane tomorrow. My cat has not wanted to eat and will only take about 2 or three bites. He will only eat treats. I know that it's because he is anxious and in a new environment. My question is: can my cat survive off off treats for a day or two? Also, can a high calorie pet paste help fill him enough?

Hello and thank you for reaching out to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Yes, Dusty will be OK even if he only eats a few bites of food for a day or two. Cats can be picky when they are stressed or anxious because of a new environment, so I would not be concerned if he is not a great eater while you are traveling. I do not recommend altering his diet too much just to get him to eat, because this can cause some GI upset and lead to diarrhea or vomiting. I recommend trying to get him to eat his regular food, and if he is not interested, offering him a few treats and plenty of water. I hope this is helpful - best of luck traveling with Dusty!
