Rabbit eye fur loss after ant bite: Is it irritation or infection?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Rabbit | Male | unneutered | 3 years and 4 months old | 5 lbs

On 18th Feb My rabbit's right eye upper lid got bitten by an ant, I cleaned the area with an antiseptic liquid called Suthol locally available here in West Bengal India. 6th March I noticed that he is loosing fur from his upper eyelid. It is clumped at the roots in tiny batches and is coming off as I touch them. No other place in his body is affected, his appetite is normal. He is 4.5 years old, male, not spayed. He was born in my house and has never been to the wild.No rabbit companion.

Poor LittleKing! I would keep an eye on the area as the hair loss could just be due to irritation from the bite. If you start to notice increasing hair loss, dirt or debris building up at the site, swelling, visible wounds, etc, then this could indicate that the area is infected. If you suspect an infection or the area isn't healing/is getting worse, it would be best to bring LittleKing to your vet to have the area cleaned, clipped and a course of antibiotics started as needed.
