Why is my female dog bleeding, swollen, and acting aggressive?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Coton de Tulear | Female | unspayed | 1 year and 9 months old

My 10 month old female dog developed sudden vulvar bleeding and her vulva is swollen. She is dripping blood around the house although it hasn’t been 3 months since her previous cycle and also her previous cycle wasn’t as heavy. She licks her vulva constantly. She is also becoming aggressive to my other male dog.

It's not common in younger dogs, but a pyometra can happen and would cause these symptoms. A pyometra is an infection of the uterus that is fatal without treatment. I would be very concerned about this possibility, and I would take Luana into a vet immediately. Best of luck.

Pyometra is a condition where the uterus becomes enlarged and full of fluid and pus. It is extremely uncomfortable and can be deadly. The uterus can rupture and cause the material inside to leak into the body. If you think that Lusi may have this condition, she must be seen by a vet immediately as surgery is likely required.
