My dog is aggressive towards kids, food, and new puppy. What to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 1 year and 10 months old | 53 lbs

Scout is 2 in a month we've taken him to a trainer who specializes in aggressive dogs and his behavior issues and barking for better for a while. But it's going back downhill again biting at kids aggression towards other animals with food and barking. Are there any suggestions to get his aggressive behavior especially with food to stop? We are a foster home for the local animal shelter and get a lot of kids at our house twice a month, and we are getting a new puppy in a couple days

This is pretty concerning behavior especially if there are young children are around, and you may want to think about whether or not your home is the best place for Scout. I think it sounds like you need to find a new trainer or behaviorist since working with a dog who is aggressive and resource guarding can be very difficult. It sounds to me like he should not be around children if he is biting, and I wouldn’t recommend leaving him unsupervised with the new puppy. This might help with resource guarding and food aggression, but I think the aggression towards kids would be the biggest concern at this point. https://www.aspca.org/pet-care/dog-care/common-dog-behavior-issues/food-guarding
