New mom dog's nipples look infected, puppy has diarrhea. What now?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Female | unspayed | 50 lbs

I have a new momma dog that just had her puppies 3 days ago and I noticed one of the pups smelling horrible! All are healthy and fine but I seen when I got in cage with her checking the pups that her pup was having bad direah and that the very tips of her nipples look to have a slight light green infection look to them? What can I do? Is she already infected the pups?

While a mammary infection or mastitis could be a possibility it would not be transmitted to the puppies and it would be safe for them to continue to nurse. It sounds like you should have Roush and the puppy with diarrhea examined by your vet. Roush may need antibiotics if she has an infection.
