How to administer parvo vaccine: Under skin or in the muscle?

In order to give it subcutanelously, the skin should be lifted to form a tent. At the base of the tent, the needle should be inserted at close to an angle parallel with rockey's back. If the injection was done intramuscular accidentally, there is not likely to be any significant side effects. The vaccine will still be absorbed appropriately. Hope this helps.

If most of the vaccine got under the skin, it will still be effective, assuming it has been shipped, handled, and reconstituted properly. Because they can be finicky vaccines, I always recommend having your vet vaccinate. Of course if you choose to vaccinate your pet yourself, follow the reconstitution and handling instructions exactly. Temperature, and using the vaccine right away is crucial. Also know that vaccine makers will pay for parvo treatment if your pet has been vaccinated by a veterinarian at the proper intervals. Of course, no matter how you choose to vaccinate Cookie, be sure that she stays away from dog parks, pet stores, and anywhere else that other dogs are frequently found. In fact if you can keep her in a back yard or using the same little area to urinate/defecate that is best. I recommend this for all pups until they are fully vaccinated. I typically have people give the injections subcutaneously at home even though the packaging recommends intramuscular since a subcutaneous injection is easier to administer. Most veterinarians feel it works just as well. I would follow your veterinarians recommendation.

Veterinarians are knowledgeable in the diseases of your area and can advise which vaccines they would like to give your pets. The vaccines are manufactured by known sources and are guaranteed from the manufacturer. If you give your own vaccines, you don't really know who made them, how they were shipped, what temperature they sat it, and if something happens they typically won't guarantee anything if your dog gets sick. If the vaccines are modified live vaccines, your adult dogs only need one shot which will last for one year. If the vaccines are killed, they will need one shot and then a booster shot in 3-4 weeks, and then one year later. No vaccine is 100% effective but most adult dogs don't get Parvo as long as they have been vaccinated for it. Good luck

Given the risk of an 8-week-old pup being insufficiently vaccinated, if you feel she got half the dose or less, I would recommend you repeat the dose so you can be sure she is vaccinated. Hello. Penicillin can be administered either way. If you do give it in the muscle, be sure to pull back on the plunger before injecting. If you see blood, move to another spot. Never inject penicillin into a vein. Thanks for using Boop by Petco.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding the puppies. I'm sorry to hear that they have parvo. I believe you are referring to subcutaneous fluids. These are fluids that are given under the skin as opposed to intravenously. This allows it to be done out of the hospital. The fluids help to keep the puppies hydrated in the face of ongoing fluid losses through continued vomit and diarrhea. Your veterinarian will need to provide the fluid bags, supplies and instruction on how to administer the fluid as well as appropriate doses for each pup.
