Pet's info: Dog | Pekingese | Female | unspayed | 3 years and 2 months old | 11 lbs
Hi, I have a three years old Peke with all the shots but recently I’ve been in a contact with a friend who’s puppy passed away from distemper (a week ago). I’ve read somewhere that humans can carry the virus and I’m scared that I might also carry it now due to the contact with the person and I’ve also been to their place. Thanks a million in advance

Hi and thanks for posting. Distemper virus is species specific and can only infect dogs as well as other animals but not humans. Humans do not carry this virus. Distemper virus is however in the same family of viruses that causes measles, mumps as well as other respiratory infections in humans but these infections are species specific. The distemper virus does not live long outside the host and is easily inactivated by household cleaners such as bleach solutions and soaps. If you are concerned, hand washing as well as washing clothing that had any potential exposure will inactive the virus. I hope this helps!
