My dogs have runny noses and sneeze. Is it a cold or serious?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 2 months and 18 days old | 60 lbs

My puppy has had a clear runny nose (not often) and sneezes when excited. Now my older dog seems to have a runny nose and some sneezing now too. Neither of them are coughing, eye discharge, or have a fever. Is this a cold or should I be concerned? It has gotten very cold where I live recently and dropped to 20 degrees Fahrenheit from like 50. They’re both still very playful, and have no problems eating and drinking. My puppies next vet visit is in 6 days.

It’s definitely possible that the dogs are passing along a virus or bacteria. It’s also possible that the air quality inside the house is dry and circulating a lot of dust particles which can cause irritation to the lining of the nose. Monitor both dogs for progression of respiratory signs, decreased energy levels or not eating well. You can also use a humidifier and an air filter in the areas where they hang out most to improve air quality. Adding omega 3 fatty acids for dogs can also help. I hope this is helpful and please feel free to post any additional questions.
