Are Pimafix & Melafix smells safe for my dog near the fish tank?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Male | unneutered | 1 year and 7 months old | 13 lbs

Is the smell of Pimafix and Melafix bad for Tiny? Right now I’m treating my fish for fungus and fin rot. And from what I know they contain essential oils.

While some essential oils can cause problems for dogs, usually this is if they are ingested or applied topically. The very small amount that would be in the air when these products are used would not be harmful. If Tiny has chronic bronchitis or other respiratory disease it might be best to keep him out of the room when you are using these since any aromatic compounds could cause irritation, but if he does not have any underlying medical problems I wouldn't be concerned.

Melafix contains tea tree oil. Pimafix contains Bay Rum oil. Both can be toxic to dogs, however at the concentration used this is unlikely. Tiny would need to chew up and drink the contents to be at risk of toxicity. Normal use in the tank is safe for him. Keep the bottles out of his reach.
