Is my whelping box heater delaying my dog's labor? She's overdue!

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Pit Bull Terrier | Female | unspayed | 45 lbs

Our baby girl was due 2 to 4 days ago. And we set up her whelping box with a heater in front of it, as she just loves to lay in front of the heater. We were wondering If the heater could possibly raise her temperature and slow down the labor process. This feels like an eternity and we are ready to have a hyper baby girl back.

The heater won't slow down the labor process. A dog's pregnancy can last between 58-68 days. If it's been 69 days and Aiko hasn't given birth, she has to see a vet immediately. If there is still time, take her temperature rectally twice a day. A dog's temperature is between 101-102.5F. Once it drops below 100F, she should give birth to her puppies within 24 hours. I hope this helps.
