My dog with heart failure is coughing. What can I do for relief now?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Miniature Pinscher | Male | neutered | 12 years old | 15 lbs

Our 12 y/o miniature pincher has a heart murmur and chf. He is on vetmedin 2.5 BID and lasix 12.5 once a day. He just started the lasix on 2-26-19. His cough got better for a few days but is now worse at night or after exercise. Is there any natural remedies I can do to ease his discomfort until the vet opens in the morning?

Poor Dylan! Bring him into the bathroom with you when you take a shower or put him in a room with a humidifier. The steam from either may help with his congestion. Have him seen by a vet first thing in the morning. If he starts having difficulty breathing, rush him into an ER vet straight away. Best of luck.
