My young female dog has blood and a male won't leave her alone. Is she in heat?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Female | unspayed | 18 lbs

Kya is 4 months and 3 weeks old. Her vulva looks bigger than usual. I looked on her potty pad and there was a light spot of blood. I looked on her bed and found more very light blood spots. Our carpet is orange-brown so we cant see any blood. Kashi, 9 months, will NOT leave her alone. He's constantly following her with his nose right under her tail. He also keeps going to her bed and licking and sniffing it. AND he just recently started trying to mount her. Could she already be in heat?

Based on what you are describing it sounds like it. Although 6 months is average, every dog is different and it can start earlier than this. So be careful if Kashi is intact because you could have an accidental breeding if not careful. I hope this helps and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach!
