My dog's thigh has a red, changing lump. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Bully | Female | unspayed | 1 year and 3 months old | 77 lbs

Hello, For 6 days ago I noticed a lump/bump on the back of my dog's thigh. At first it was only pink and raised and then it had changed in the following days. It has become more red and it looks like there is only a thin layer of skin over her flesh now. I'm afraid of what it might be and would need some advice on this and what top do. I've cleaned it with water and cotton pads. The first picture is from enten I first noticed it and the last is from today. What could this be? Thanks!!!

It could be a small cyst, pustule/papule, or possibly a Histiocytoma which is a benign mass that is common in young dogs. Since it is getting more red, she should be examined by a vet to determine the cause. The vet may want to aspirate it and examine the contents under a microscope. She may need an antibiotic, anti-inflammatory, it may need to be removed, or just monitored (histiocytomas typically resolve with no treatment). You could use an over the counter spray, like Vetricyn, and see if that helps relieve any redness or discomfort.
