Why is my Dachshund shaking his head? What are the common causes?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 1 year and 2 months old | 15 lbs

Sam has started shaking his head ALOT! I am concerned about what this could be? He is healthy & weighs approx 15lbs. Miniature Dachshund male, neutered & takes Heartgard & Nexgard monthly. Thank you, A. Lawson

Head shaking can often be a sign of an ear infection, something stuck in the ear or a tooth problem. Lift up his ears and look in the canals for redness, discharge or odor. Ear and tooth problems need to be evaluated by a veterinarian and I recommend to have him seen today if possible. I hope this is helpful and please feel free to post any additional questions.
