Why is my Dachshund shaking his head? What are the common causes?

Sam has started shaking his head ALOT! I am concerned about what this could be? He is healthy & weighs approx 15lbs. Miniature Dachshund male, neutered & takes Heartgard & Nexgard monthly. Head shaking can often be a sign of an ear infection, something stuck in the ear or a tooth problem. Lift up his ears and look in the canals for redness, discharge or odor.
