Can I safely breed my hamster again after a difficult first litter?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Hamster | Female | unspayed

My hamster has been bred at about 3 months old last August. She had a litter of 12 but only 4 survived (the others had liver failure due to mastitis) :( she is doing great now with no symptoms and is about 9-11 mo old. Can i safely breed her again. Also I had tried after the resting period after her first litter but I think she re absorbed them because I moved her to a new cage to prevent mastitis from happening again.

Thanks for reaching out about Holly. It should be safe to breed her again, as long as she appears healthy. A veterinary examination would help with a health condition assessment. Although, there are plenty of hamsters in the world looking for home, do you have enough friends to dole them out to? Good luck.
