New kitten sneezing, coughing, watery eyes, and not drinking?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | unspayed | 4.4 lbs

My 6 month old cat was adopted and brought home 2 days ago and has been sneezing ever since she’s been here, she hasn’t been drinking water, and hasn’t pooped since she’s been here. Sometimes it sounds like she’s having a hard time breathing and seems to be devolping a cough. Also has watery eyes.

It sounds like Poppy could have an upper respiratory infection causing her cough, nasal congestion and eye discharge. The lack of pooping probably isn’t related - unless she is straining to defecate I’d guess that she’s not constipated but instead may not be comfortable with the new litter box. She will most likely poop when she has to go badly enough. I would recommend making an appointment to see your vet to determine whether or not she might have an upper respiratory issue.
