My puppy is throwing up bile. When should I take him to the vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 22 lbs

My five month old puppy has been vomiting on and off for the last few hours. He did get into some muddy rain water yesterday, but I dont know if I should take him into the vet. He is completely vaccinated and dewormed. The vomit was initially his food and is now just looking like bile. He is not lethargic and is peeing and wanting food regularly.

Poor Skeeter! This muddy water could have upset his stomach. Because he is otherwise acting normal, I can give you a home remedy to try before bringing him into the vet. Feed him a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If he vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, he will need to see a vet right away. I hope this helps!
