My dog hates daycare. Can I leave her home alone for 8-9 hours?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Husky | Female | 7 years and 6 months old | 65 lbs

I recently started a new job and I'm working longer days and more often than my old job. I'll be working 8-9 hour shifts regularly. I'd take my dog to daycare but she hates going. She'd rather stay home. When my sister or mom are home, she doesn't tend do go outside. We had a bad experience with a pet sitter, so we're hesitant to do that. Is it okay to keep my dog at home for that long? She loves being outside and I'd hate for her to just sit in the house while I'm gone. Any recommendations?

Phoebe is an older dog, so she can be left at home alone that long. Do you have a friend that she likes who you can pay to stop by and let her out once during the day? Otherwise, especially since she likes being inside, she should be fine. When I was in vet school, I often had to leave my dogs inside that long, and they were ok. Just take her for a longer walk when you get home to get her exercise. I hope this helps.
