My new Petco parakeet has a bloody, possibly broken toe. What to do?

Thanks for reaching out about Rodger. A veterinary visit is recommended to check for a fracture or infection from the missing toe. Either way, this is probably painful. A fracture needs to be set, just like in any animal. Infections need to be managed with antibiotics. Good luck.

Thanks for reaching out about Pearla and including a photo. You need to determine where the blood originated from. Broken toe nail apply flour or corn starch. Broken blood feather: place her in a quiet dark area for her blood pressure to drop, she will work it out herself. Any other wound needs to be seen by a veterinarian. Monitor water and food consumption but try to keep stress low. Good luck.

If Sara is otherwise acting normal and the bleeding has completely stopped then I would not be too concerned. She most likely tore a toe nail and it caused the bleeding. Continue to monitor Sara for the next day or so. As long as the bleeding does not continue and she is eating well and otherwise acting like herself you should have nothing to worry about. Hopefully your bird just injured her toe nail and is a little sore. However, she may have fractured a bone in her foot when she became stuck. Poor bird! If the foot is at all infected, trying to find a vet that can help in person is best. However, until you can find one, it is a good idea to separate the bird from any cage mates to keep from being picked on, and move him to a warm hospital cage with larger, flat perches that will make perching easier on his feet. Keeping the foot clean and dry and using an ointment such as Blu-kote (most feed and pet stores carry this for use in poultry and other birds) can help prevent infection. You can also Google how to make a bird-sized Elizabethan (cone) collar to put on the bird so that he can't get to his foot and bite it while it heals.

Ouch! That does sound like she's injured her foot. Until you can get to the vet, providing some low, flat perches that are easier to stand on (like a platform rather than having to curl her toes around it) and food and water dishes she can easily climb in and out of may help her relax the foot a bit and maintain her balance easier. Keeping her warm and preventing her from picking at or chewing on the foot can also help. If she's housed with other birds, moving her to a hospital cage to avoid being picked on is also a good idea.

Hi, It looks like Charm’s foot had trauma that caused a break in the skin (hence the bleeding). What you are seeing now looks like a scab that needs to heal. I would suspect Charm is in some degree of pain or discomfort and I can’t rule out that a bone may have been broken, so a trip to the veterinarian for an exam and pain medications (and perhaps antibiotics) would be best. In the meantime, keep the foot clean and dry as the scabs heal, lower any perches if she seems hesitant to weight bear, and make sure she eats and drinks well.

Thank you for using Boop by Petco! I can see that Baby is missing a toe nail and that the toe is swollen. There is a little bit of caked on feces, but the toe itself is swollen. It is also concerning that the nail has come off and that the toe itself is somewhat gray, as this can be a sign of necrosis, or tissue death. This may have been caused by increased pressure on the foot, so you should definitely try to keep a variety of perches in the cage. This may have been due to trauma from Baby's previous environment, so you should keep a close eye on the area, and have her seen by a vet if the gray color begins to spread. I hope all is well!

I am so sorry that this happened to you and Pluto! From the photos, Pluto appears to be putting weight on both of the legs, which is good news. Also, the toes are all about the same size from what I can see, which is good as well, as hopefully that means there is not too much swelling. Pluto may be painful on the toes, and that could be why he is holding them away from the other toes. You can do one of two things - you can monitor for the next 24 hours or so, and if there is any worsening of the signs (limping, not putting weight on the leg, or if the toes turn red or are bigger than the other toes), you can take Pluto to a veterinarian for evaluation. The second option is taking him to a veterinarian sooner to get him looked at, if you are concerned right now. At the veterinarian, they can take a feel of the legs and ensure there are no broken bones. If needed, they may recommend performing radiographs (x-rays) to evaluate this as well.
