My cat just had kittens. What are these orange bedding stains?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 6 days old | 0.8 lbs

My foster cat gave birth on Monday (6 days ago) to 4 kittens only 2 survived. I changed the nest bedding the next day as soon as she would let me. I just changed it again because the blankets were noticeably dirty. One of them is covered in some kind of orange staining. No noticeable odor but I have a head cold right now..... Any idea what this could be?? If it came from the mom or kittens? Should I be concerned?

This looks like it could be feces from the kittens or from mom. I would monitor them closely and if mom seems to be having diarrhea I’d recommend having her examined by your vet. The kittens stool might be a little loose but if it seems watery or if they don’t seem to be eating or gaining weight normally you should have them examined.
