Cat's jaw swollen and painful after dental care. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 13 lbs

I recently started trying to car for my cats teeth as I haven’t cleaned them for awhile. I been using this green jel since she’s not the biggest fan of having her teeth touched. Her jaw now has a scrape/cut on it and her bottom jaw is swollen on the back half. I can’t pet her there without her twitching, which seems to be irritating her. She had cuts before but never seen her jaw swollen.

Please make an appointment to have Gia seen by a vet as soon as possible. A swollen jaw can indicate infection, a foreign body stuck in the jaw, or a mass/ growth in the area, all of which can be extremely painful and require treatment by a veterinarian. Pain medications meant for humans can be very dangerous (and even deadly) for cats, so I do not recommend giving any to your kitty without consulting with your vet.
