My cat's deformed back claw clicks. Is it causing him pain or limping?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 14 lbs

Hello, Our cat, Bud, has diagnosed FLV and diabetes, for which he is receiving treatment. One of his back claws is majorly deformed--we can hear him click as he walks throughout the house, and occasionally he limps upon initially standing. Is there anything to be done for this? It's hard to know whether it is just an annoyance or if it is causing him pain.

This claw looks very malformed - I wonder if he had previous trauma to his toe. If he’s never had an x-ray of his foot it might be a good idea to make sure the bones in his toes look normal. If he doesn’t limp he may not be significantly painful, but if he does limp pain medication, joint supplements or even amputation of the toe might be indicated.
