Why did my cockatiel die suddenly or get parasites while broody?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Cockatiel | Female | unspayed

Qn.1 My cockatiel laid 4 eggs and was able to hatch 3 of them and rear them good. One day momma cockatiel started behaving wierd that it didn’t feed her chick at all she kept on sniffing sniffing and sniffing as if she aspirated. The next I found her dead. Why ? What could have been done (to prevent this happening again)? Qn.2 How to get rid of ticks from cockatiel when it is broody and reading chicks ?

Thanks for reaching out about your birds. First thoughts are of a tracheal obstruction, possible infection or aspirated seed. Either of these can lead to acute death. Ticks are extremely rare in birds and can usually be removed manually. Mites or lice are more common. Treating them with organophosphates might be risky with chicks around. If possible, wait until chicks are weaned and out of the nest. Then the cage can be thoroughly cleaned and the birds treated. A veterinary visit will be needed to prescribe a treatment. Good luck.
