Dog's elbow sore won't heal. What can I do or should I see a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 125 lbs

My dog Bailey has a sore on his front right elbow. It's been there for one week. I thought that it was a tooth Mark maybe from when he was at the dog park. It's not getting worse but it's not getting better. The first five days that I noticed it, I put polysporin on it. He's obviously looking at so that's not helping it heal. Will it heal on its own? Or do I need to take him to the vet? Or is there something I can do to help it? Bailey is a very large dog and he does tend to lay on this side.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Bailey. He appears to have a skin infection over the area of his elbow elbow callus. I recommend that he sees his veterinarian. This can be a difficult area to heal as you mentioned dogs tend to lay on their elbows. In the meantime, place an E-collar on him to prevent any further licking as this will make the wound worse. If an infection is present, he will likely need oral antibiotics to help it heal. I hope this information helps!
