Why is my Shih Tzu gagging, struggling to breathe with throat phlegm?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Male | neutered | 9 years and 8 months old | 26 lbs

I have a shih tzu that has been having issues with something in throat, and I do not know what the issue is. When it seems he's trying to throw up, it sounds like he has some sort of slimy substance or phlegm stuck in his system but cannot get it out. It's been happening for awhile now and it has become a growing concern. Recently, he was having some difficult time breathing the other night. I think when he was breathing, it sounded like his breathing is being interrupted by the phlegm

Poor guy. It is possible he has a bit of an upper respiratory infection. I would recommend getting him seen by your vet for something like this, because he will need the vet to listen to his lung and heart sounds for any abnormalities and clues as to what is going on internally. He may also need x-rays of his chest if there is severe congestion heard in his chest. I do hope that your fur baby Bobby is able to get this sorted out soon! Best wishes and take care.
