My puppy is picky and won't eat kibble. How do I get him to eat?

My 2 months old Pomeranian puppy won't eat anything except boiled chicken and treats ....he is happy and playful just picky with eating right now .. What could it be ??

It is likey just that - him being picky and stubborn. I would see if he would at least eat canned food. Canned food is at least more of a balance diet than just chicken and rice. If he doesn't eat, be sure to give him some nutrical to help keep his blood sugar up since he is so tiny. It will likely take you becoming stubborn as well to get him to transition to regular diet, but you don't want him to miss too many meals. You could also slowly mix in some soften kibbles with the chicken to help him get use to the taste and over a few weeks, decrease the amount of water you use to soft the kibbles and decrease the chicken as well. If you end up just cooking for him, I would visit balanceit.com to ensure he is getting a balanced diet. I hope this helps !

    A home cooked diet is not necessarily balanced for optimal nutrition. You may want to try changing the flavor of food offered, or you could mix a small amount of the home cooked food he has been eating in with his kibble. If you have any reason to think he has a medical problem causing a decreased appetite (such as if he is losing weight, vomiting or having diarrhea) you should see a veterinarian.

    This is certainly a frustrating situation! Puppy food needs to be the staple of Tucker's diet until he is one year old, but that is sometimes easier said than done. Try mixing a very small amount of canned food or low sodium chicken broth into his kibble. Eventually you may be able to wean him off of these dietary bribes. Another option is trying a different brand or flavor of food, but anytime you change his diet be sure to do so gradually over 5-7 days.

Dogs can be picky eaters, especially if they are given a choice of what to be picky about. I would not feed dairy products such as curd or too many fruits as this can cause digestive upset and diarrhea. If he likes chicken and rice, you can add the vitamin (or a liquid vitamin supplement to it) or even some veggies such as carrots or broccoli, however trying to get him on a balanced commercial diet is best. You'll want to put down the food for 15 m to give him a chance to eat, and then pick up whatever doesn't get eaten. While transitioning, you should not give any people foods, snacks, treats, other items, etc save for his regular meals. It may take some time, but a dog won't starve and they'll eventually try out the food. Sneaking in a little chicken or even low-sodium broth in with the food may also encourage eating in those 15 m windows.

My 4 month old Japanese Spitz only eats chicken and rice.He doesn't eat any dog food.
As you probably realize this is not a balanced diet for a growing puppy. If you haven't already I would recommend trying various canned puppy foods with a little chicken and rice mixed in. If he absolutely won't eat you can talk to your veterinarian about whether or not it is safe for you to leave food out and wait for him to eat when he's hungry - this could take a day or even longer. If you don't mind cooking for him you could also ask your veterinarian for a referral to a nutritionist to help create a recipe for a balanced home cooked diet.

Unfortunately, chicken and rice is not a balanced diet for the rest of his life! There is something you can do about him being a picky eater, and it does involve tough love. As you say, he won't eat his soft dog food unless he's really hungry. If that's the only food he is offered, then he will start eating it consistently. Put down his food for 15-20 minutes, and once that time is up, pick it up and put it away even if he didn't eat it. Offer him no other food (human food, treats) for the day. At his next mealtime, put his food down for 15-20 minutes, and take it away after that time period. Again, give him no other food between meals. If you keep doing that, he will learn to eat his food at mealtime and he will start eating consistently. It's extremely important for this to work that you give him no other food other than his soft dog food at mealtimes. I hope this helps :-)

Hi there! Scooby sure sounds like he's becoming a very picky eater! A lot of dogs do this, and the more you give in, the more they will demand new and different foods mixed in and people food. The best way to break the behavior is to offer him his food, and no matter how long he takes to eat it, wait it out. Eventually he will realize that that's what he's getting to eat and that's it! If some people still have trouble at this point, I tell them to try balanceIT.com. it is a website that teaches you how to make a home cooked diet for your dog and also offers a supplement you can add into the food to make sure that they ate getting enough of the minerals and vitamins that they need. Unfortunately, it's not likely to be a nutritionally balanced diet for Pocholo, and as a growing puppy, he needs higher amounts of protein, calcium, and calories to support his growth. He really should be eating a puppy formulated food, and you may have to get tough with him to eat it. You can try mixing together pureed chicken with with puppy food so he can't just pick out the chicken, and over the course of two weeks, increase the amount of puppy food and decrease the amount of chicken puree until he is eating the puppy food only. Being tough on him would mean putting his food down for 15-20 minutes in the morning, and then taking away after that time even if he hasn't eaten. He then gets NO other food until his next meal time, no treats or human food at all. This is very important. Then at dinner time, put his food down again for 15-20 minutes and take it away after this time even if he hasn't eaten. No food again until breakfast the next morning. He needs to learn that he n

My dog only eats boiled chicken and rice.. I've tried every brand of dog food there is but she doesn't even look at them. What should i do?
As I'm sure you are aware, boiled chicken and rice are not a complete and balanced diet for Jessi. There are a couple of options in this case. If you want to feed her a homemade diet, I will put links below to websites that provide healthy and balanced recipes for homemade diets for dogs. Given that you are trying to get her to eat dog food, I bet you don't want to have to go to the hassle and expense of making her a homemade diet every time. In that case, it's time to get tough with her. Pick a brand of dog food (I recommend Royal Canin, Hill's Science Diet, Purina ProPlan, or Iams) to feed her, and stick with it. Put her food down every morning for 15-20 minutes, then take it away after that time. It doesn't matter if she's eaten or not. Now the important thing is to give her NO other food during the day. No treats, chicken, rice, human food, etc. Absolutely nothing. Then at dinner time, put down her food bowl, leave it for 15-20 minutes, then take it away after that time.

My dog is a mix of a Maltese and Jack Russell...she is about two weeks now..I have a problem in feeding her dog food because she doesn't like it...she normally only drinks milk and water and ultimately eats some of her dog food only when she is left
This is a common problem in small breed dogs. They can be stubborn when it comes to dry food. I would stop offering her milk as this can upset her tummy. You could mix in some canned food or boiled chicken with her dry food to see if this helps to entice her to eat. If so, slowly start to decrease the canned food until she is just on dry food. And you may have to just be more stubborn than her. If she is continuously refusing the eat or not acting right then I would take her to your vet to ensure everything is okay. If she is skipping meals and she weighs less than 5 pounds then I would supplement her with nutrical (high calorie vitamin supplement) to help prevent her blood sugar from becoming too low. What she is doing is training you to feed her what she wants when she wants it. You can stop this by discontinuing the chicken bits. If she isn't on a consistent schedule for feeding, start one immediately. Dogs thrive on routine. Prepare her food and leave it down for 20-30 minutes before picking it up whether she has eaten or not. Repeat this at the next mealtime. Do not offer any food or treats between meals except for tiny training rewards. Do not worry, she will not starve herself. She will eat when she is hungry and sees that no other food is forthcoming. Be firm and be consistent otherwise you may be creating a very finicky eater.

Hi there! Thanks for using Boop by Petco! Sometimes, if no other clinical symptoms are observed, this may be just behavioral and not medical in nature. You can try 1-2 days of just trying to feed him his normal diet to see if it is just behavioral. It it is, often times, they start eating normally when they discover no other good foods will be offered if they do not eat their typical diet. If he does not start eating normally, I recommend that you have Bongo evaluated by your veterinarian to ensure there is not a medical reason to explain his symptoms. Good luck and have a good day!

Small breed dogs are notoriously picky and I'm afraid you have made it worse by giving in to her "not liking a food" so quickly that you have trained her to hold out for something better. I suggest you refer to this article for more information on how to handle this. I recommend you pick one food that you want to feed that is in your budget and follow the steps in the article. Do not give any treats or humans foods. Do not talk to her at all during feeding time. She will not starve herself. Dogs can go multiple days without eating. Don't feel sorry for her. To entice her to eat you can mix a teaspoon of canned dog food (the same brand) in with the dry food. Hormones can cause them to be picky eaters.
