What natural bedding is best for my gerbils' new desert habitat?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Gerbil | Male | unneutered | 1 month and 27 days old

I am setting up a new habitat for my 2 sibling gerbils. I want it to be as natural of a habitat as their ancestors in the wild live in. Which substrate would you recommend that would be as natural as they would receive in their desert environment?

Gerbils come from a desert environment, but sand as a substrate is not practical and difficult to keep clean. Instead, you can use aspen shavings, hay or recycled paper bedding. Make it deep enough so they can tunnel through it and make little nests.
