My dog's phenobarbital has side effects. Can I use CBD for seizures?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Morkie | Male | neutered | 7.8 lbs

My 12 morning suddenly had a seizure that I noticed. He was prescribed phenobarbital and diagnosed with epilepsy. The side effects are horrible and I want to take him off immediately. He’s been taking the drug for a week now. Is CBD oil a better alternative? Can I stop giving him these medicine?

Poor guy. Since it takes this drug roughly 2-4 weeks to stabilize in your pets system, it is safe to do a mild tapering of the medication. Ask your vet for tapering instructions since this was prescribed by him/her only. I would then consider getting Kasey on an alternative anti-seizure medication called Zonisamide instead. CBD oil is not legalized in many states for pets nor does it have any proof to stop seizures in pets at this time, so it would not be a good option for Kasey. I hope that Kasey's seizures are managed well soon! Best wishes and take care. : )
