My pet rat was lethargic, then convulsed and died. What happened?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Rat | Female | unspayed | 0.8 lbs

Came home two days ago to find our normally energetic pet rat acting sluggish/lethargic, and dazed. She seemed to be loosing coordination and allowed herself to be picked her up very easily which is typically not the case. She also began to drink water more than normal. Within an hour of noticing this we decided to take her to a pet hospital. Halfway there, she began to violently convulse and died. Any insight into cause of death would be greatly appreciated.

Poor Scout! I am so sorry for your loss and traumatic event. It is hard to say exactly what was going on but she have contracted some weird type of viral infection or bacterial meningitis causing these symptoms. Rats are also known for getting cancer and a brain tumor certainly could have caused similar symptoms. Again I am sorry for your loss. Hang in there!
