My dog has a lump or abscess. How can I help her before the vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua (Smooth Coat) | Female | unspayed | 17 years and 7 months old | 5 lbs

My dog has this lump. It looks like an abscess. I am trying to get her to the vet but will not be able to get in for a couple days. I know to put warm cloths on it but is there anything else? She is eating fine and does not help or anything when I place the warm cloths on her

Poor Ginger! I cannot say for sure without seeing her in person, but this looks like a tooth root abscess. I would continue the warm compresses until you are able to get her seen by your vet. If this is the cause, your vet will likely put her on some antibiotics and also recommend to have the tooth causing the issue to be extracted. I hope this helps and she starts to feel better soon!
