Senior dog refusing food after tonsil biopsy: pain or cancer?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Poodle | Male | neutered | 13 years and 1 month old | 9 lbs

My 12 year old male toy poodle has a growth on his tonsil that is pending biopsy. It might be a squamous cell carcinoma. His bloods are normal. The biopsy was yesterday and he's refusing to eat. Do you think this is due to pain from the biopsy or from advanced cancer? Was given Metacam. I don't want to lose him.

Poor Mussi! It is likely from the soreness of the biopsy. I would go ahead and give the pain meds like instructed if you haven't already. I would also try to entice him to eat with some plain boiled boneless skinless chicken and white rice or a plain scrambled egg. If this doesn't help him eat, I would contact your vet. Your vet may want to see him back to give him something for his appetite or to look at where the biopsy was done. I hope this helps and he starts to feel better really soon!
