My dog's penis is infected and oozing. Can I use leftover cephalexin?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 5 years and 10 months old | 76 lbs

My dog has what appears to be an infection on the tip of his penis. He has been licking excessively and it was oozing pus last night. I cleaned with antiseptic wipe. He seems to be somewhat lethargic but not in too much pain. I can clean without any hesitation. I also have left over cephalexin that I could use to treat the infection if that would be necessary. I feel it doesn't warrant a vet visit right now I am just hoping it is not internal.

My biggest concern is that he could also have a bladder infection that is causing him to lick a lot and therefore also causing an infection on his penis. Without seeing him to determine exactly what is infected and whether or not the bladder is also infected, I cannot say that the cephalexin will work. I would strongly recommend to have him seen by your vet. If there is a urinary tract infection and it is left untreated, it could get much worse and even start to affect the kidneys. Your vet will be able to determine if the cephalexin you have will work or if you need something stronger. I would also put a cone collar on him to prevent him from licking it any more and causing more irritation. I hope this helps and he starts to feel better really soon!
