What's causing my dog's dark, thick, sore skin on chest and stomach?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Female | spayed | 4 years and 3 months old | 75 lbs

My German shepherd recently began showing aigns of dark and pruple rough, thick skin with sores on her chest and stomach. My old labrador had the same issues in her old age. I'm not sure what it is or what to do? Is it something in my house? I have her on a all natural grain free diet already.

Without seeing it in person, it is difficult to say for sure but it looks like a skin infection with yeast and possibly bacteria. This is usually secondary to allergies. It could be something in your house or environment, but it is usually really hard to narrow down the cause. I would certainly have your vet take a look at it. Your vet make want to put her on antifungal meds and antibiotics plus something for allergies. You could try Benadryl twice a day but it may not be strong enough. I hope this helps and she starts to feel better soon. https://www.petcoach.co/canigive/dog/benadryl/
