Why won't my dog eat after taking antibiotics for a broken nail?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Bulldog (duplicate) | Male | unneutered | 80 lbs

Midas’ nail recently broke completely off. We took him to the vet who bandaged his paw and prescribed some antibiotics as well as a pain medication. It’s been about 5-6 days since the vet, he’s been eating normal up until yesterday.. now he won’t touch his food. Could the pills be hurting his stomach? This is a dog that LOVES food, he eats his entire bowl no problem usually.

It could be the antibiotics, as it can cause GI upset. I would try offering him a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice small amounts a couple of times a day for a few days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If King Midas refuses to eat the bland diet, take him into the vet. I hope this helps!
