My cat has FeLV. Will a blood transfusion work or will they get sick again?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | spayed | 1 year and 9 months old | 8 lbs

Is it true that if your cat has feline leukemia and needs a blood transfusion that it may not take and if it does she may still need more or get sick over and over again because of the leukemia virus?

Cats have a likelihood of rejecting blood if not matched and blood typed appropriately. There are precautions that need to happen before any transfusion. Each consecutive transfusion comes with a greater risk of rejection. But, it's likely that if your cat needs a transfusion due to feline leukemia it will need transfusions again and again. Feline leukemia is unfortunately non-curable so it is likely the cat will just continue to get sicker and sicker.
