Why does my female dog “hump” my cat?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It is a display of dominant behavior. This is generally not a big concern but I would try to avoid as much as possible as she could hurt the kitty by mistake. Have a great day!

Good question. My dogs do that too and the cat lets them. It’s a sign of dominance rather than sexual. I think they want to make sure the cat knows they are the boss of the house. My cat tolerates it and just goes about his business. Unless the dog is hurting the cat it’s nothing to be overly concerned about. Certainly saying no and off is fine to train your dog to leave the cat alone. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to help you get answers to your veterinary questions.
