My cat just got neutered. What to expect with anesthesia, cone, pain?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 11 months and 15 days old | 10 lbs

Hi so my cat got neutered a couple hours ago and I was wondering how long does it take for the Anastasia to wear off? And does he need the cone right when he gets home because I put it on him but it’s bothering him And does he feel any pain afterwords? I paid for them to give him a shot of pain medication but I don’t really know if that was to help for after words

Depends on the anesthetic used, it can take up to 72 hours for a pet to completely recover. Most pets will recover within 24 hours. The e-collar (cone) is necessary to prevent licking of the incision. Don't worry though, Chandler will acclimate. You may be able to remove it for short periods to allow him to eat or drink, but you must watch him carefully to prevent licking. The injection should cover the worst of the post operative discomfort. If not, you can request more from your veterinarian. Monitor for lethargy, decreased appetite, meowing excessively, drooling or panting. These may indicate discomfort.
