Why is my dog agitated, restless, and avoiding walks and other dogs?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | unspayed | 13 years and 4 months old | 45 lbs

My dog has been acting very strange! She will get really agitated at times and won’t stop walking around the house and doesn’t want to lay down. Then when I take her out for a walk she doesn’t want to walk far and she gets scared to get close to any other dogs. She’s never been this way before & she’s also has been deaf since she was born.

Hello, thank you for your question about Sasha. Some of the symptoms that you are describing such as agitation and reluctance to lie down/walk normally could be secondary to pain/discomfort. Dogs can be uncomfortable for a variety of reasons. I would recommend having Sasha seen by your veterinarian so that they can examine her and try to localize the source of her pain. Hope this helps!

That is hard to say since Sasha can’t talk and tell you what she is feeling. It’s possible she is uncomfortable somehow (arthritis, urinary tract infection, anal gland problem) or that something in the environment is making her have anxiety. Try taking her for a long walk followed by a training session. See if this helps to get her settled and back to normal. Also check the environment for anything that may cause her distress such as abnormal sounds or being able to see a cat or squirrels out the window. If the symptoms persist for longer than 24 days, have her checked out by her veterinarian for any pain or signs of infection. I hope this is helpful and please feel free to post any additional questions.
